Michael Reichelt (TU, advisor O. Steinbach): Factorization-based solvers for finite element equation systems on tensor product meshes

Abstract: Finite element simulations lead to large systems of equations that are difficult to solve. However, if the mesh has a tensor product structure in at least one dimension, factorization techniques can be applied. This is particularly interesting in the context of space-time finite elements, since one can define the test and ansatz spaces as a tensor product of temporal and spatial spaces and thus obtain the desired structure for the factorization-based solver. In this talk, we will first explain this method for the simple example of the Poisson problem and then apply it to the more challenging heat equation.[hide abstract]
